FAQ

Does OXID follow a fixed software release schedule?

We provide two minor version releases annually to ensure you receive continuous updates and enhancements. The exact release dates may be slightly adjusted to prioritize stability. Major versions, which involve significant advancements, are released only after comprehensive development, a cycle that typically takes several years of dedicated development and testing. This strategy allows our teams to deliver more optimized and stable releases.

Are there any risks running an outdated OXID eShop version?

We provide selected fixes for maintenance and legacy versions, whereas outdated software versions do not receive all patches. This can lead to unintended behavior of your shop. For optimal stability and security, we advise using supported OXID eShop versions.

Are there any additional changes for outdated versions?

The OXID Product Management prioritizes changes based on specified criteria. The most essential changes, such as critical security or compliance updates, may then be released as an OXID eShop extension. These extensions are typically compatible with a selected version range that may include certain outdated OXID eShop versions.

Does my OXID eShop run automatic updates?

Our software is designed as a self-hosted solution deployed on the hosting service you choose. This ensures data ownership and strategic decisions are managed by you. Consequently, you are responsible to perform updates. You can follow our step-by-step update manuals or ask an agency of your choice to complete the update process.

How do I get informed about new releases?

As a contact person in any contract with OXID eSales AG, you will be notified by email on the day of release. Please don’t block your contact email for such information. Additionally, the OXID eShop administration area displays a banner to inform about a new version.

If you registered for our newsletter, you will also receive another email that tells about any new update. These newsletters are usually sent a short time after public release. We also announce new versions on other channels like social media.

If you want to know what the current release is, you can always check this page.

Can I contact OXID with questions about an outdated OXID eShop version?

You are welcome to reach out to OXID Technical Support, Sales, or your designated contact person no matter what software version you are using. We will assist you with any OXID product to the best of our ability.

Does the Technical Support Team provide solutions for outdated OXID eShop version?

The Support Team will assist you with issues as best as possible. If there is an easy solution for outdated versions, they can guide you on what to do. Keep in mind that some issues are resolved by performing an update. This means, the Support Team might suggest an update as the best solution.

What can I do if I’m running an outdated OXID eShop version but need an important security update?

To ensure the best security and stability, we suggest updating to at least one of the legacy versions. However, depending on the severity of the security issue, we may publish additional patches for outdated versions in the form of an extension or provide steps to implement the fix yourself.

Please see our security information for more details.

Why does my OXID eShop version differ from your release?

Probably you are looking at the package version which can differ from the actual release. The OXID eShop is a Composer project consisting of several single packages. This collection is what we call the compilation. One example can be found in OXID eShop 7.0.0: This compilation includes the oxideshop-ce package in version 7.0.1 since the single package was already updated to a newer version from the beta release to the final OXID eShop 7.0.0 release.

Don’t worry about that: Always stick to the compilation version we announce in our releases. Only this version is important to find compatible extensions, develop your own ones or read the correct documentation.

Does OXID’s versioning follows any schema?

OXID uses Semantic Versioning 2.0.0, which is a very common way of defining versions. It follows the schema of three numbers, where the first is major, the second is minor, and the third is patch.

Patch releases primarily contain fixes, while minor releases implement new features that maintain backward compatibility with existing configurations. Both release variants can occur several times a year. A major release typically takes a few years to develop. Besides a larger amount of changes, a major release has breaking changes. These changes require you to modify extensions, configuration or the environment that the OXID eShop uses.
